Curriculum Philosophy
At Batchwood School, our curriculum is central to our mission of supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs to succeed both academically and personally.
We recognise that positive relationships, emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging are essential foundations for learning. Our curriculum is therefore designed to provide a safe, structured and ambitious learning environment where every student can rebuild confidence, develop resilience and achieve meaningful success.
Our approach reflects the principles of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework, focusing on curriculum intent, implementation and impact, ensuring that what we teach is carefully planned, consistently delivered and leads to strong outcomes for all students.
Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that every student receives a broad, balanced and ambitious education, while recognising the individual needs of students within a specialist SEMH setting.
We aim to:
- Provide a rich and engaging curriculum that broadens students’ experiences and aspirations.
- Develop strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and communication, enabling students to access learning across all subjects.
- Support students to re-engage with education, build confidence and develop positive attitudes towards learning.
- Ensure that knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced, allowing students to build understanding over time.
- Promote independence, resilience and self-regulation, preparing students to overcome challenges.
- Provide opportunities for students to develop personal, social and emotional skills alongside academic learning.
- Raise aspirations and prepare students for further education, employment and adult life.
- Ensure that every student experiences success, belonging and personal growth during their time at Batchwood.
Our curriculum recognises that behaviour can often be a form of communication. Through a relational and therapeutic approach, we support students to develop emotional awareness, positive relationships and the confidence to engage fully in learning.
Curriculum Implementation
Our curriculum is delivered through a structured and supportive learning environment designed to meet the needs of students with SEMH.
Key features of our curriculum delivery include:
- Small class sizes to support personalised learning and strong relationships.
- Adaptive teaching strategies that respond to students’ individual needs and starting points.
- A broad Key Stage 3 curriculum including English, mathematics, science, humanities, the arts, technology and physical education.
- Opportunities for practical, creative and outdoor learning, supporting engagement and confidence.
- Targeted literacy and numeracy support where needed.
- Personal development and preparation for adulthood, helping students build independence, communication skills and resilience.
- Access to vocational and alternative learning pathways in Key Stage 4 to support future progression.
Alongside academic learning, we recognise the importance of supporting students’ emotional wellbeing so they are ready to learn. Students have access to a range of support including mentoring, counselling and the Mental Health Support Team (MHST). These services help students develop strategies to manage their emotions, build resilience and engage positively with learning.
Our pastoral and therapeutic approaches work alongside the curriculum to remove barriers to learning and enable students to make positive progress both academically and personally.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of our curriculum is measured through both academic progress and personal development.
Through our curriculum we aim to ensure that students:
- Develop the knowledge, skills and qualifications needed for their next stage of education, training or employment.
- Become confident learners who are able to persevere and overcome challenges.
- Improve their emotional regulation, resilience and self-awareness.
- Build positive relationships and contribute positively to their community.
- Leave Batchwood as well-rounded young people prepared for adult life.
By combining academic learning with strong pastoral support and opportunities for personal development, our curriculum enables students to grow into confident, capable and resilient individuals.
